Caltrain Modernization

Caltrain ridership has increased at a faster rate than that of any other Bay Area transit agency over the past decade.

The Caltrain Modernization Program will electrify and upgrade the Caltrain's commuter rail service between San Jose and San Francisco.

Caltrain Improvements by 2020

Slated for operation by 2020, this program will allow Caltrain to:

  • Run quieter, cleaner, faster and more frequent trains
  • Boost revenue by increasing ridership
  • Reduce costs by replacing diesel fuel with electricity
  • Prepare the Peninsula corridor to accommodate statewide high-speed rail service, which is planned for 2029

The $1.7 billion program includes installation of an advanced signal system known as Positive Train Control, which is required by the federal government.

What’s in Store for 2040

By 2040, Caltrain estimates electrification and extension of the corridor to the new Transbay Transit Center in downtown San Francisco will:

  • Boost daily Caltrain ridership to 111,000
  • Reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 176,000 metric tons
  • Reduce annual vehicle-miles traveled by 619,000

Funding partners for the Caltrain Modernization Program include:

  • Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority
  • City of San Jose
  • City and County of San Francisco
  • Transbay Joint Powers Authority

Electrified trains operated by both Caltrain and the California High-Speed Rail Authority will share existing tracks in the Caltrain corridor between San Jose and San Francisco.

This “blended system” will reduce costs, speed implementation, and limit impacts on adjacent neighborhoods.

The blended system may include:

  • Passing tracks in select locations to allow High-Speed Rail trains to bypass Caltrain trains
  • New grade separations and other crossing improvements
  • New train storage and maintenance facility
