Temporary Lane Changes at Antioch Bridge Toll Plaza

Next Step for Regionwide Toll Equipment Upgrades

Oakland, CA — Motorists may experience brief delays during off-peak hours at the Antioch Bridge toll plaza each day from Friday, Dec. 7 through Monday, Dec. 17, as Caltrans and the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) make temporary lane changes in order to install a new automated toll collection and accounting system.

Beginning Friday evening, Dec. 7, one of the three toll lanes at the Antioch Bridge toll plaza will be closed at most times, though all three lanes will be open during the weekday peak period from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. On weekday mornings from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., one of the two available toll lanes will be dedicated exclusively for carpools, with the other available for customers paying tolls with either cash or FasTrak. During non-peak hours, one lane will be a FasTrak-only lane, with the other available for either cash or FasTrak customers. Installation of the new toll system at the Antioch Bridge toll plaza is slated for completion by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17.

Following completion of the equipment installation at the Antioch Bridge toll plaza, contractors working for BATA, in conjunction with Caltrans staff, will be performing similar work through much of 2013 at the toll plazas of five other state-owned toll bridges, beginning with the Carquinez Bridge and Richmond-San Rafael Bridge toll plazas in early 2013, and continuing with the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge and the Dumbarton Bridge later in the year.  Workers completed installation of the new toll collection equipment at the Benicia-Martinez Bridge toll plaza in August 2012.

Upcoming projects at the Carquinez, Richmond-San Rafael, San Francisco-Oakland Bay, San Mateo-Hayward and Dumbarton bridge toll plazas each likely will take at least four or five weeks to complete, with work schedules subject to delay in the event of inclement weather.

BATA, which is directed by the same policy board as the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), administers toll revenues from the region's state-owned toll bridges.  MTC is the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. Caltrans owns, operates and maintains the state highway system, including seven Bay Area toll bridges.
