Decision Approaches for Plan Bay Area at Joint Meeting

OAKLAND, CA — The San Francisco Bay Area’s first combined transportation and land-use/housing plan, known as Plan Bay Area, is slated for adoption this week at a joint board meeting of the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). Officials from MTC and ABAG will consider approving the final Plan Bay Area, along with the associated Environmental Impact Report, Regional Housing Need Allocation, Air Quality Conformity Analysis, and Transportation Improvement Program, at a special joint public meeting on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at the Oakland Marriott Convention Center/West Hall located at 1001 Broadway in Oakland, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

More than three years in the making, Plan Bay Area looks to the year 2040 and charts a course for the Bay Area’s first-ever Sustainable Communities Strategy, designed to accommodate needed housing growth and transportation investments within the nine counties, while at the same time decreasing greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks. The effort grew out of 2008 California legislation (Senate Bill 375, Steinberg) which requires each of the state’s 18 metropolitan areas — including the Bay Area — to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks. The plan will be updated every four years to reflect new information and emerging priorities.



ABAG is the council of governments and regional planning agency for the nine counties and 101 cities and towns of the San Francisco Bay region. MTC is the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area’s transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency.
