Clipper® Card Announces Golden Gate Collectible Card

Limited Edition Clipper Card Celebrates the Golden Gate Bridge 75th Anniversary

OAKLAND, CA — The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has partnered with the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District (GGBHTD) to create a unique and commemorative limited-edition Clipper card in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, which was celebrated on May 27, 2012. The Golden Gate Bridge Clipper card is the second collectible card offered this year. The first co-branded card was jointly produced with Oakland’s Golden State Warriors basketball team.

The transit fare card can be loaded with passes, tickets or cash value for the Golden Gate Bus & Ferry system run by GGBHTD as well as for AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, SamTrans, San Francisco Muni, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, the Dumbarton Express and San Francisco Bay Ferry (currently only the East Bay-S. San Francisco line accepts the Clipper card).

“Building partnerships with public and private sectors on co-branded Clipper cards not only further positions Clipper as iconic to Bay Area mobility, but the collectible cards serve to recognize the Bay Area’s rich history and its unique contributions as well as to help build civic pride,” said Carol Kuester, director of Electronic Fare Payments for MTC. “A collectible Clipper card is both useful and fun.”

GGBHTD General Manager Denis Mulligan added, “Since May we have been celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge and the commemorative Clipper Card is just another great way to recognize this Bay Area milestone.”

Starting Monday, August 27, the limited edition, collectible Clipper card will be available for purchase for a base price of $7 (starting September 1, a standard Clipper Adult fare card will cost $3.00, so the differential for the special commemorative card is only $4 more than the base $3 cost). August 27 is significant because it was on this date in 1930 when Joseph B. Strauss, Chief Engineer, submitted the final plans for the Golden Gate Bridge. The cards currently may be purchased at two venues, with additional locations in the works:

  • Golden Gate Online Store (currently offering a $25 preloaded version of the card that includes the $7 base cost plus $18 in cash fare value)

    store.goldengate.org
  • Golden Gate Customer Service Center (currently offering the preloaded $25 version of the card with $18 in cash fare value, or can custom-load with another amount or a pass)

San Rafael Transit Center, Platform D

    850 Tamalpais Avenue

    415-455-2000

The Golden Gate Bridge Clipper card features a beautiful artistic rendering of the bridge, the recognition of its 75th anniversary and the Clipper logo. The card packaging includes archived photos of the bridge’s opening days and interesting bridge trivia, along with instructions on how to use and reload the card as well as contact information for answers to Clipper card questions and planning a transit trip. Supplies are limited – only 10,000 Golden Gate Clipper cards have been produced.

Introduced in June 2010, Clipper is an all-in-one transit card that keeps track of any passes, discount tickets, ride books and cash value loaded onto it. Clipper accounted for 611,000 average weekday transactions during July 2012 which amounts to nearly half of all transit rides in the Bay Area. There are 1,255,275 active Clipper cards in circulation as of July 31, 2012.

Clipper is a project of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
