2nd San Mateo-Hayward Bridge Closure Canceled Thanks to Quick Progress on Repair

Caltrans announced today that thanks to better than expected progress on deck repairs, the second weekend closure of the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge — originally scheduled for October 26-29, 2012 — has been canceled. Motorists can expect lane closures as needed in the coming weeks so that crews can continue working to complete the project; however, there will not be any further full weekend bridge closures for the duration of the project.

The first weekend closure ran from October 19 to October 22, 2012, during which a new seismic joint was installed, an operation that involved replacing 60 feet of bridge deck at the location -- just east of the highrise section.

Crews working for MTC's Bay Area Toll Authority used the closure opportunity to also replace crash cushions at the toll plaza while Caltrans maintenance crews completed roughly two months' worth of maintenance work, including:

• 100,000 square feet of structural painting
• 170 tons of paving
• 220 feet of guardrail replaced
• 90 signs replaced
• 50 square feet of graffiti removed
• 40 drains cleared
• 3 truckloads of litter collected
• 3 truckloads of vegetation (weeds) removed.

Caltrans to Close San Mateo-Hayward Bridge Over Two Weekends

Caltrans announced today that the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge will be closed over two weekends, October 19-22 and October 26-29, 2012. The full closure for all eastbound and westbound lanes will begin at 10 p.m. on Friday and continue until 5 a.m. on Monday. The bridge will be open for the weekday commute.

The full closure will allow crews to replace a damaged expansion joint that allows the bridge decks to expand and contract with changing temperatures and in response to seismic forces. Located just east of the high-rise portion of the bridge, the joint extends horizontally across all six lanes of traffic (three westbound and three eastbound lanes). The operation will involve the replacement of 30 feet of the bridge decks on either side of the joint, for a total of 60 feet of new roadway being installed during the closures.

Commuters are asked to use alternate routes such as the Dumbarton Bridge or Highway 237 to the south of the San Mateo-Hawyard Bridge, or the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to the north, or to use public transit.
