As the old Bay Bridge East Span was being dismantled, and its foundation piers demolished by implosions, the decision was made to retain some of the piers as tangible reminders of the original span, with viewing platforms to appreciate the new East Span.
For the first time in Northern California history, there will be bike and pedestrian access connecting the East Bay with Marin County. A moveable barrier will separate automobiles from those on foot.
The Toll Bridge Program Oversight Committee approved in 2014 a program to salvage some 450 tons of steel from the old eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge for creative reuse in public art and exhibitions throughout the state.
