San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge: June 2006 Closures

In June 2006 Caltrans will embark on the second in a series of three major operations in its retrofit-by-replacement of the Bay Bridge West Approach structure in San Francisco. The demolition and rebuilding of a segment known as Frame 8-U North will require night time and early morning closures of the Bay Bridge during the weekend of June 2-5, 2006.

[Update: Previously scheduled closure during the weekend of June 9-12 has been canceled.]

Work on Frame 8-U North also will require a significant re-routing of traffic on westbound Interstate 80 to a new lane alignment, which will begin the first weekend in June and is expected to remain in place until late 2006. In addition, the Fifth Street off-ramp from westbound Interstate 80 will be permanently relocated, beginning in early June 2006, about one-half mile west of its current location.

The new lane alignment pattern on the westbound Interstate 80 approach into San Francisco is expected to result in major traffic impacts on the upper deck of the Bay Bridge, particularly in the first few weeks as drivers become accustomed to the new configuration. The relocation of the Fifth Street off-ramp is expected to create moderate traffic impacts as well.
