MTC is counting down the days to Monday, May 23, 2016 — the agency’s first day at the new regional government center at 375 Beale in San Francisco. Both staff and the public have been anticipating the move to San Francisco since the building was acquired in 2013. After retrofitting the eight-story structure designed as a military armored vehicle assembly plant during World War II, MTC finally received the Certificate of Occupancy from the Fire Marshall early this week.

“MTC is excited to announce a move date and to begin preparations for the move,” said Andrew Fremier, MTC’s deputy executive director for operations. Located at 375 Beale Street in San Francisco’s Rincon Hill neighborhood, the new building — branded as the Bay Area Metro Center — is just a block away from the Temporary Transbay Terminal and walkable from the Embarcadero BART Station as well as the San Francisco Ferry Building. It is also served by several Muni lines.

The Bay Area Metro Center will be the new headquarters for MTC and two sister regional agencies: the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD). The close proximity of these partner agencies is intended to foster regional collaboration on the key issues confronting the Bay Area, including climate change, crowded and aging infrastructure, and the housing affordability crisis.

Mixing a dose of old with an infusion of new, the Bay Area Metro Center will feature the latest technology to record and stream meetings so that the public can tune in virtually, and decor that reuses wood recycled from piers extracted when the old Transbay Terminal was demolished.

During the renovation and seismic retrofit, the center of the building was carved out to create an atrium, an expansive communal space naturally lit from sunlight streaming through the sky roof. Planned future amenities include a café, a food purveyor, a technical library and a regional resource center where people can purchase Clipper® cards and access information and publications for all the agencies housed at the building. The FasTrak® Customer Service Center will be housed on the second floor.

MTC and ABAG will be moving in the weekend of the May 20 and the Air District will move in the following weekend. But members of the public can get a preview of the new building at the meetings of MTC’s committees earlier in the month. Check MTC’s meetings page for the most up-to-date information.
