Clipper® Expands to More Sonoma County Bus Services

Transit Card Now Accepted on Petaluma Transit, Santa Rosa CityBus and Sonoma County Transit
Starting February 24 riders on Petaluma Transit, Santa Rosa CityBus and Sonoma County Transit can pay for fares and transfer between buses with ease using Clipper®.

OAKLAND, CA — Clipper, the all-in-one transit fare payment card already accepted on 17 Bay Area transit systems, is officially expanding on Wednesday, Feb. 24, to three more bus services in Sonoma County: Petaluma Transit, Santa Rosa CityBus and Sonoma County Transit.

The three transit agencies will accept Clipper cards loaded with cash value, and each agency will offer a 31-day pass good for unlimited travel on its service. Riders can get a card and add passes online at clippercard.com, at their local transit agency ticket office, at any Sonoma County Walgreens store, Raley’s stores in Rohnert Park and Santa Rosa, and at other selected retailers. Once they have a card with value, riders simply tag their cards to a card reader at the front of the bus. Sonoma County Transit riders also will need to tag at the end of each trip since fares are based on distance traveled.

Clipper is a service provided by Bay Area transit operators and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.

“I am delighted to have Clipper on more transit in Sonoma County,” said MTC Vice Chair and Rohnert Park City Councilmember Jake Mackenzie. “It will be especially convenient for people who ride multiple transit services since Clipper automatically keeps track of your transfers. You can set your Clipper card to automatically reload, and you can use your transit benefits with Clipper. These features make the card a much more attractive alternative to cash.”

Clipper already is accepted on Muni, BART, AC Transit, VTA, Caltrain, SamTrans, Golden Gate Transit and Ferry, San Francisco Bay Ferry, Marin Transit, County Connection, Fairfield and Suisun Transit (FAST), SolTrans, Tri Delta Transit, Vacaville City Coach, VINE, WestCAT and Wheels.

Transit riders use Clipper for fare payment on roughly half of all transit trips in the Bay Area, and the card was used for an average of more than 750,000 trips each weekday in January. About one-third of all registered Clipper cards are signed up for Autoload, which automatically reloads value on the card when it runs low.

The Clipper network will expand again in 2016 to include Union City Transit, and Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) will accept Clipper when it starts operation later this year.
