About Tolls and Traffic
Tolls are collected manually or electronically in one direction on each of the state-owned bridges according to a toll schedule established by BATA and the California Legislature. For the typical automobile, a $4 toll is collected — a $2 base toll and a $2 seismic retrofit surcharge. Heavier, multi-axle vehicles pay a higher base toll as determined by the toll schedule. Each year, over 130 million vehicles cross the seven state-owned toll bridges in the Bay Area, generating approximately $400 million in total toll revenues — including more than $145 million in base toll revenues and $130 million in seismic retrofit surcharge revenues. The base toll revenues are used first to cover the ongoing operations, toll facilities maintenance and administration of the bridges. Remaining toll revenues fund debt service on Regional Measure 1 project financing and various transit and traffic-relieving capital projects that serve the bridge corridors. Regional Measure 2 funds are used to fund the Regional Measure 2 projects. The seismic surcharge toll revenues are used to fund a multibillion-dollar seismic retrofit program to strengthen and reinforce bridge structures and roadways on five of the seven state-owned Bay Area bridges, including replacing the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
