SMART Extensions

Following the opening of the 43-mile first segment, SMART plans to extend north from the Sonoma County Airport station to Windsor, Healdsburg and Cloverdale, and south from downtown San Rafael to Larkspur.

SMART will feature two-car trains powered by clean diesel engines reaching a top speed of 79 mph.

Fasters Trains, Quicker Commute

Including stops, travel speed is expected to average 40 mph, covering the Santa Rosa-San Rafael corridor in about one hour.

SMART’s start will mark the return of passenger rail service to Sonoma and Marin counties for the first time since the 1950s.

The SMART corridor also will feature a bicycle/pedestrian path running alongside the rail tracks. This pathway will be developed in phases.

SMART construction is funded mainly through the Measure Q transportation sales tax approved by Marin County and Sonoma County voters in 2008.

Other funding partners include:

  • MTC / BATA
  • Sonoma County Transportation Authority
  • Transportation Authority of Marin
  • Federal Transit Administration
  • California Department of Transportation

From north to south, stations opening as part of SMART’s first phase include:

  • Sonoma County Airport
  • Santa Rosa – Guerneville Road
  • Santa Rosa – Railroad Square
  • Rohnert Park
  • Cotati
  • Petaluma
  • Novato – San Marin/Atherton
  • Novato – Hamilton
  • San Rafael – Marin Civic Center
  • San Rafael – Downtown

The only way to pay fares on SMART will be with the MTC-managed Clipper® card.

Travelers can use Clipper vending machines at SMART stations to:

  • Buy a Clipper card
  • Check  the balance on a card
  • Add value to a card
  • Load passes or other fare products on a card.
