Interstate 880 Integrated Corridor

Interstate 880 between the Port of Oakland and Silicon Valley is one of the Bay Area’s most congested freeways.

MTC and its partners are harnessing intelligent transportation systems, or ITS, to relieve congestion, enhance safety and improve air quality.

Together, we’re working to manage both I-880 and major adjacent streets like International Boulevard through Oakland as a unified system.

This requires cities, counties and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to work together — free from political boundaries.

The I-880 project will install:

  • Electronic signs to inform you when I-880, or the Nimitz, turns nasty
  • Closed-circuit TV cameras and vehicle detection stations
  • Coordinated traffic signals on nearby arterials

MTC is developing the I-880 Integrated Corridor in partnership with:

  • California Department of Transportation, District 4
  • Alameda County Transportation Commission
  • Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority
  • California Highway Patrol
  • Cities along the corridor

Total costs for the first phase in the cities of Oakland and San Leandro are estimated at $14 million.

The Interstate 80 corridor between the Bay and Carquinez bridges is getting an ITS makeover, too.  Slated to go live soon!

The corridor — which includes San Pablo Avenue as well as I-80 — will feature an integrated network of electronic signs to help you make informed decisions, reduce merging conflicts and manage traffic volumes.  

The City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County is spearheading a similar set of ITS improvements along the U.S. 101 corridor, from Interstate 380 to the Santa Clara County line.

Elements include:

  • Fiber optic cable installation
  • Coordinated traffic signals
  • Dynamic message signs on key arterials
  • Closed-circuit TV cameras and vehicle detector stations
